I've just heard this week is National Women's Heart Week. Each of my three daughters were in a National Heart Foundation Demonstration Skipping Teams during school years. Spreading the word about health and fitness and heart disease for the Heart Foundation. Eldest daughter continued to coach and train skipping teams for the Heart Foundation for many years after.
Heart Disease apparently kills
3 TIMES MORE WOMEN THAN BREAST CANCER!!!
I think somewhere in all the years of hearing these types of facts during skipping demonstrations, I knew this. But now, for obvious reasons, this fact I heard this morning astounded me.I'm always poking and prodding my boobs, not for fun, well sometimes for fun, but mostly anxiously looking for lumps. I have regular breast screening done. And so far, thank God, so good.
It dawned on me that I am not as diligent with my Heart, and considering my heart sees much more action than my boobs, I probably should be.
3 TIMES MORE LIKELY TO DIE OF A HEART ATTACK THAN BREAST CANCER. I'm sure that fact is IF you don't have a family history of Breast cancer, which I don't.
I fit all the categories, slightly overweight (YES I said slightly alright!) Carry my weight around my middle (all the better for bouncing babies on), and am, as we now know all to well, nearly 60.
So, it's off to the doctors for me. The story this morning encouraged women (and men) to go and have a check up. But if you are like me, you think the doctor is going to roll their eyes and think you are overreacting or tell you it's just muscular or indigestion. Which is exactly the symptoms the story said you SHOULD go get looked at. I just hope the General Practitioners around Australia are on board with National Women's Heart Week.
I'm sure I'm fine. Although, I imagine those have been famous last words for some people.
LADIES & GENTS - GO GET YOUR HEART CHECKED.
(disclaimer: perfect opportunity to show off my beautiful girls, hee hee, they're little)
